01

Surface & composition

4 papers

What 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko is made of and how its surface behaves.

[1]2019astro-ph.EPPreprint

Layerings in the nucleus of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Birko-Katarina Ruzicka

What they foundBoth lobes of 67P show stacked layers, like rock strata, and their orientations could be mapped across the nucleus.

Why it mattersLayer geometry is a clue to how the comet was built, for example whether the two lobes formed separately.
What they studied

A thesis that mapped layer lines on a 3D shape model using high-resolution Rosetta OSIRIS images.

Airfall on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

B. J. R. Davidsson, S. Birch, G. A. Blake & 11 others

What they foundDust lifted from one hemisphere of 67P falls back on the other as 'airfall', losing some of its water and CO₂ ice on the way.

Why it mattersAirfall explains why some regions are blanketed in debris and which areas should be more active on the next pass near the Sun.
What they studied

Numerical simulations combining orbit dynamics, heat flow, gas flow and dust motion.

Elemental and molecular abundances in comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Martin Rubin, Kathrin Altwegg, Hans Balsiger & 18 others

What they foundThe team built an inventory of the major elements and volatile molecules in 67P's nucleus, which turns out broadly similar to comet Halley.

Why it mattersComets preserve early Solar System material, so this inventory is a baseline for what the planets were built from.
What they studied

Rosetta ROSINA gas measurements near perihelion, combined with published dust composition data.

Cliff collapse on Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko -- I. Aswan

Björn J. R. Davidsson

What they foundWhen the Aswan cliff collapsed on 10 July 2015 it exposed material from about 12 m deep, with roughly equal dust and water ice by mass and a lot of CO₂; a thin dust coat re-formed within about 7 months.

Why it mattersIt is a rare look at fresh comet interior and how quickly a comet's surface 'skins over'.
What they studied

Rosetta MIRO microwave data from before and after the collapse, analysed with heat-flow models.

02

Orbit & dynamics

1 paper

How 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko moves, and the gravity and sunlight forces that shape its path.

[5]2014astro-ph.EPPeer-reviewed

The recent dynamical history of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

Lucie Maquet

What they found67P's orbit has been reshaped by close passes of Jupiter, notably in 1923 and 1959, and its path is chaotic on short timescales.

Why it mattersThese encounters are why 67P now comes close enough to the Sun to be active and to have been reachable by Rosetta.
What they studied

The authors followed 1,000 'clone' orbits backwards in time, with and without the push from outgassing.

03

Origins & history

1 paper

Where 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko came from and how it formed and changed over time.

[6]2016astro-ph.EPPreprint

Origin of molecular oxygen in Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko

O. Mousis, T. Ronnet, B. Brugger & 13 others

What they foundThe oxygen gas seen at 67P (1–10% of the gas) could have been made by radiation hitting icy grains before the Solar System formed, then trapped in ice cages called clathrates.

Why it mattersIt suggests 67P's ingredients are older than the planets and it formed early in a dense part of the young Solar System.
What they studied

A modelling study testing how oxygen could be produced and stored, compared with Rosetta's ROSINA gas measurements.

How we choose papers

We search arXiv for 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko papers and keep the ones that add something new, are clearly written up and are relevant to a general reader. A person reads every abstract.

Our own words, our own drawings

Summaries are written by us from each paper’s abstract, not copied. Diagrams are our own simplified drawings, not figures from the papers.

Preprint vs. peer-reviewed

“Peer-reviewed” means arXiv lists a journal reference for the paper. Everything else is marked “Preprint”: shared openly, possibly before or without journal review.
